Spain's jobless rises 2.7 pct in Oct vs Sept
MADRID, Nov 3 . - Spanish jobless claims rose in
October by 98,906 or 2.7 percent from September to 3.8 million
people, almost a million more than a year earlier, the Labour
Ministry said on Tuesday.
"Unemployment continues to rise in line with expectations,
but at a lesser rate than the same month last year," Employment
Secretary General Maravillas Rojo said in a statement.
Spain's jobless leapt 7 percent in October 2008 from a month
earlier as the international financial crisis took hold.
Layoffs in the service industry rose 2.9 percent
month-on-month, accounting for almost two thirds of all job
losses during the month.
Unemployment rose 1.2 percent in construction, by 1.1
percent in the industrial sector and by 12.4 percent in
agriculture.
Spain only provides quarterly data on the unemployment rate,
but according to the European Union statistics office, it stood
at 19.3 percent in September compared to the average for the
27-member EU of 9.2 percent.
